The name Bash Ali comes with the acronym “Champion, World champion, record-breaker” amongst many other accolades and he remains one of the numerous Nigerians who has made the country proud globally.
The boxer, who was referred to as the ‘black Moses of Boxing’, is the only boxer in the world to win a World boxing title without first boxing as an amateur.
Bashiru Ali, popularly known as Bash Ali, was born on 27 February 1956 in his hometown of Lagos, Nigeria.
He started his boxing career in September 1978 at age 22-year-old in California, USA and his very first fight was for money which he won but was robbed of the decision because he fought the hometown boy.
He is the only boxer in the world to win every cruiserweight title conceivable and has won the California title, United States Boxing Association title, North America Boxing Federation title, World Boxing International title twice.
Bash Ali singlehandedly resuscitated the game from the dead and became the Redeemer of Boxing in Nigeria after his first world title defence on 5 December 1987.
In 2004, Bash Ali retained his World Boxing Federation cruiserweight after his opponent, Tony Booth from Britain, threw in the towel after just three rounds in their scheduled 12 round encounter at the indoor sports hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.
Although the fight ended in the 3rd round when Tony Booth’s corner threw in the towel, they were later to explain that Tony had slipped in his hotel bathroom and injured his ankle on the morning of the fight, but that he had to go out and fight in order not to let the teeming boxing fans down.
Cementing his legendary status, The former world cruiserweight champion announced his intention to be in the Guinness World Record as the oldest boxer to fight for a world title.
This singular act of the world champion at the age of 64 is beyond human comprehension.
Whether this unthinkable dream is possible, only time will tell. But what is sure is that generations yet unborn around the globe will read the Champion’s life history as a legend in the world boxing game.
